Original Story - Dorset Pagans burn a Wicker man at festival

Are UK pagans more crafty (sorry about the pun) than their American cousins? This brief article gives me the impression that might be the case.

"The weekend also featured craft workshops, archery, music, talks and meditation." - from the article.

In the US, the music, talks, and meditation are there but I don't notice many "craft workshops" and have never seen a class on archery at a pagan festival. When I was a speaker at Convocation, some of my presentations included forging, sculping in clay (an excuse to get dirty), finger painting, and the likes. Oddly, I was one of the only craft presentations as I recall and rarely do I see crafts promoted at US pagan festivals.

Was this an exception in the UK, or are things like crafts and archery common place at UK pagan festivals?

Yeah, it's pretty common.

Most events and workshops here tend to have some form of craft work thing that people can go to. Things like making wands, staffs, goddess statues, shamanistic pouches, runes, candles, incense. All that kind of thing is fairly common.

I have also seen the crafts workshops, at the last one i went to they did all the same craft workshops in the children's area also, which was really sweet, lots of little kids making incense and 'potions'. very cool. haven't seen archery at a pagan festy yet though either..

Farming, planting, hunting? I have always thought a harvest festival where the feast is harvested and prepaired by those in attendance would be great.

In the US, the idea of a community farming its own land, raising its own stock, seems limitted to some of the really nutty Christian organizations.

We just had a couple, both associated with abuses against children, raided. Each more or less self sufficient communities. Not long ago, there was one in Texas that ended with a long stand off, firefight, and lots of deaths. Again, a Christian based organization.

We definitely do a lot of craft stuff at our pagan get togethers. I've made power sticks, flutes, and seen workshops for dream catchers, medicine pouches, masks and so on.

there is a lot of provision made for children at the festy's, our son always goes with us so i guess we specifically look out for that, but yes it's easy to find ones with dedicated childrens areas. the last one we went to was great because all the different tent's/tipi's/marquees/yurts (lots of workshop space, it was awesome) were all set up in a circle facing inwards with the children's area/tent smack in the middle, so no matter where on site you were you could easily see the children. wonderful layout, really well planned and greatly appreciated.

An event I am going to in August, called "Pagan Camp", is designed to be a self-contained community for the length of several days and each person is expected to provide some kind of service for the camp. My girlfriend and myself will by running a workshop as our contribution.
However, leading on from what AJ has said above, one thing that everyone is expected to do is bring a donation to add to the communal soup.

Uh, that kind of scares me. Please do tell, you don't mean that everything goes into ONE soup / pot?

Depends how much there is.

If people just bring a small amount of vegetables, etc. then it should all work out. Mind you, this is my first year at this particular event, so I'll let you know ;-)
